Newcomer Senior Centre (NSC) Service Facilitator
(Forty-Two-Week contract, May 2009 – March 2010)
Competition No. 5

CultureLink, a settlement services organization committed to equity and anti-oppression, is seeking a part time contract NSC Service Facilitator (0.4 FTE for forty-two weeks). Reporting to the Program Manager, the Service Facilitator will assist with the establishment of a service centre for newcomer seniors and will research, develop and implement programs best suitable for the target group. The NSC Service Facilitator is also responsible for recruiting senior volunteers and coordinating peer support activities.

Job Responsibilities:
• Assist the Program Manager to establish the Newcomer Senior Centre at CultureLink.
• Regularly report to the Program Manager on program development and program needs
• Maintain all relevant records and statistics such as workshop registration and attendance sheets for volunteers and clients.
• Responsible for room-booking, refreshment and other logistics for senior group sessions
• Responsible for NSC supply procurement and keeping an inventory of NSC equipments.
• Actively recruit, orient and train senior volunteers, as well as match profiles for peer support activities at the service centre.
• Provide volunteers with ongoing coaching, motivation and support
• Mobilize the volunteers to reach out to marginalized newcomer seniors
• Collaborate with other programs (i.e., HOST, JSW, SEPT, NSP, NYC and LSP Programs) to coordinate inclusive and coherent services for seniors and encourage seniors to participate in CultureLink events where applicable.
• Liaise with other community senior programs to develop a basis for interagency collaboration
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications:
• Two (2) years minimum of experience with community and social services including services to seniors and new immigrants.
• In-depth understanding of senior issues, especially the barriers and challenges facing the newcomer seniors
• Experience of working as a volunteer before is a must.
• Experienced in coordinating and working with volunteers: recruitment, orientation and training, placement, recognition and evaluation is strongly preferred
• Extensive knowledge on settlement services available for seniors in the community.
• Familiarity with community and social services in the City of Toronto, in particular the west central downtown and experienced in working with community organizations
• Experience working in multicultural setting with staff, clients and volunteers from different ethno-racial backgrounds
• Excellent interpersonal skills and computer literacy are required
• Must be able to communicate effectively both in English and one of the following client groups’ languages: Mandarin, Portuguese or Polish.
• Attention to details and excellent organizational skills are required
• Self-directed, self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team
• Able to work flexible hours, some evenings and weekend work

Note: The NSC envisions “newcomer senior services by the seniors, with the seniors and for the seniors”. Therefore, the preference will be given to older adults (55 or older) who are themselves first generation immigrants.

Salary: This position is remunerated at $15
Schedule: 2 days, or 14 hours, per week
Contract: 42 weeks
