JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Manager, Networks & Facilities, the Senior Network Analyst is responsible for providing uninterrupted support and analysis to the University’s multi-application networks, developing project schedules, and prioritizing networking work. The functions/projects are considered integral to the operation of the university's network environment and have wide-ranging implications. The incumbent provides technical leadership to implementation teams and provides expert knowledge and guidance to junior staff. This position involves independent decision-making, responsibility, personal initiative, and technical proficiency.
The Queen’s campus network of over 25,000 Ethernet ports connects 200+ buildings through a dual core network using Cisco switching and firewall devices. Pervasive wireless 802.11a/b/g/n is provided by over 2,000 Aruba Networks devices.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Undertake detailed analysis for the development of networking, identify ways of enhancing existing network facilities, define problem areas, develop viable solutions, determine the cost benefits of recommended solutions, develop project schedules, and prioritize work.
· Provide network design and implementation expertise for large-scale multi-application networks.
· Plan and coordinate the installation and integration of new networking devices and technology and upgrades to existing elements.
· Advise on the feasibility of projects using knowledge of the policies, procedures, security and business operations of ITServices and the University.
· Define the functional requirements of projects, i.e. the scope, and the various system components both manual and automated.
· Provide technical leadership to a variety of technical teams on all areas of networking (including voice, video & data, TCP/IP networks, H.323 & SIP, OSPF & BGP, multicasting).
· Responsible for formalized, continuing work direction and leadership to team members including scheduling, assignment of work and progress reviews. Provide expert knowledge and guidance to junior staff through leadership and collaboration. Delegate work to junior staff as appropriate.
· Provide continuous, uninterrupted support for the University’s networking environment.
· Ensure that outstanding operational problems are addressed on a daily basis.
· Contribute to restoring networks in the event of failure at anytime of the day by diagnosing problems, contributing to the resolution plan by recommending solutions, and taking corrective action.
· Develop and maintain standards and ensure that established policies and procedures are adhered to. Recommend changes to policy and procedures as necessary in order to adapt to new developments in the industry and changes in ITServices or the University.
· Carry out other administrative procedures as required such as committee work and report writing.
· Write technical documentation for network design and maintenance and non-technical documentation for end-user support.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
· A degree in Information Technology specializing in networking (or an equivalent level of education or demonstrated work experience in a network support role).
· Detailed knowledge and a minimum of five years working experience at command line and configuration level with campus switched ethernet and wireless networks, and firewalls.
· A minimum of 5 years’ experience implementing and managing very large enterprise data networks, and LAN/WAN/WLAN security.
· Minimum CCNP in Routing and Switching, CCNP Security and Aruba ACMP Certification. (Additional certifications are an asset).
· Leadership and project management experience is required.
· Consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.

SPECIAL SKILLS:
· The ability to integrate technology into a diverse workplace that supports teaching, research and administrative activities. The ability to learn new technologies and assess their usefulness to users.
· Communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills to be able to provide leadership to technical teams in ITServices and across campus. Ability to direct individuals in a manner conducive to the smooth and efficient operation of the department. Ability to communicate effectively with non-technical senior University staff.
· Project management skills including the ability to prepare cost benefit analysis and business case
· Work with a "client-centred" perspective and possess customer-service instincts.
· Extensive understanding of ITServices and University policies, procedures, and principles, and how they affect the goals and functioning of the Infrastructure Unit within ITServices.
· Possess judgement, tact, and foresight in order to predict trends and problems and adapt processes to optimize outcome. Adapt to changes without compromising quality of products and services.
· Ability to work under pressure, time constraints and to handle/manage numerous tasks effectively.
· Ability to work outside of normal business hours as required.

DECISION MAKING: Examples of the types of decisions regularly made on the job:

· Decide on modifications to production networks which affect users across campus. Decide on timing for resolving systems problems. Develop timely solutions to avoid major administrative problems caused by device failures.
· Act as consultant to campus customers and make recommendations on methods of doing work under current procedures.
· Evaluate various technologies and recommend the most effective solution to ITServices and client departments in order to facilitate communication, efficiency, and accuracy.
· Plan new initiatives within ITServices and, upon request, for other departments. Determine project guidelines and time lines.
· Make recommendations for Queen's faculty, staff and students regarding networking software and hardware acquisitions.
· Allocate time and resources in order to ensure project completion, based on the priority of tasks on hand. Decide how work may be delegated based on the skill sets of junior staff.
